USA and China Plan Talks on Tariffs
For the first time, high-level talks are taking place in the trade conflict between China and the United States. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer plan to meet with representatives of the People’s Republic of China over the weekend, according to statements from the respective authorities. The meeting is set to take place “in the coming days.” Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter is also scheduled to meet with Bessent in Geneva.
Since the escalation of the trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies in early April, U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed additional tariffs of up to 145 percent on imports from China. In response, Beijing has introduced surcharges of 125 percent on imports from the United States. As usual, Trump made contradictory statements regarding whether talks between the U.S. and China are actually taking place.
In light of the announced tariff increases, the pharmaceutical and other industries are taking precautions and increasingly airlifting goods to the United States.
